Steps urged to extend dearness allowance to media persons
PFUJ Secretariat
Media Release
Islamabad, Jan.30 :-The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has urged the government to take immediate steps for extending the Dearness Allowance to employees in media organizations in consonance with the price indexation.
This demand has been made in the meeting of the prime body of the PFUJ held at the Islamabad National Press Club.
The meeting, noted that the wages and the fringe benefits of media persons have not been enhanced since July 1996 as against the government and semi-government employees who are being regularly given various benefits to compensate them in view of the price spiral.
The meeting also noted that the government employees as well as employees of national news agency (Associated Press of Pakistan) were given dearness allowance on six occasions between 1996 and to-date along with increase in pay on five different occasions.
The FEC regretted that media workers in the private sector were being treated discriminately and were being forced to work without any time limit, enhancement in wages, facilities available in various labour laws.
The FEC also expressed its dismay over constant silence of government agencies which never take any notice of violations of the labour laws with impunity by the media owners.
The FEC demanded that the media workers be also extended the Dearness Allowance which was earlier granted and extended to government employees from 1996 to date to compensate the media workers in the wake of extraordinary inflation and price hike prevailing in the country.
