PFUJ seeks new labour policy
Islamabad, Feb. 3 :- The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists has called upon the government to formulate a new labour policy and industrial relations laws in consultation with all stake-holders as per conventions of the ILO.
The FEC of the PFUJ, which met here at the National Press Club Islamabad, noted that a majority of labour laws which should have been beneficial for workers as per conventions of ILO have been made vague, non-practicable and detrimental to economic interests of workers and their job security during the dictator Pervaiz Musharaf era under which unilateral and arbitrary amendments were made at the behest of capitalists and industrialists.
The meeting also observed that at present almost all the labour laws, which should have been beneficial for workers, have been converted into anti-worker laws, snatching all basic rights of workers, including job security and basic facilities.
The meeting also demanded that labour laws be brought in conformity with the recommendations of ILO conventions which is a constitutional and international obligation of the federal government as Pakistan is a signatory to the ILO conventions.
The meeting also demanded changes in the Employees Old-Age Benefits Scheme, Social Security Scheme, Workers’ Children Education Fund, Workers Welfare Fund, Standing Order Ordinance 1968 to make them more feasible for workers so that they can enjoy various facilities admissible in these laws.
The FEC reminded the government that a number of facilities are available in the existing labour laws, but owing to cumbersome procedures and lengthy processes, workers cannot avail such facilities which was causing frustration among them and in government institutions.
The FEC was of the view that it is the duty of the government and legislators to realise the situation and take steps on a war footing for making changes in the labour laws to make them accessible through simple, workable, speedable mechanism for extending the required facilities to workers as well as media persons.
